Novel Craft · Lesson 6

Revising the Manuscript

Big-picture passes first: arc, chapter function, then line. Do not polish a chapter you will cut.

Step 1 · Read

Passes, not one magic reread

Professionals separate structural revision from prose shine.

  • Pass 1 — spine: Does the want escalate? Does the midpoint exist? Who is different at the end?
  • Pass 2 — chapters: Cut or merge units with no turn. Move exposition into conflict.
  • Pass 3 — scenes: Enter late, leave early. Summary the travel.
  • Pass 4 — line: verbs, filter words (she noticed, she realized), repeated tics.
  • Never line-edit a chapter whose event you already know you will delete. That is unpaid labor to yourself.

Step 2 · Apply

Put it into practice

A short exercise to turn what you learned into skill.

Paste a short novel passage. Revise it. Name one structural or line cut, and one strengthening move.

If you only swapped synonyms, go back and cut a sentence that explains a feeling the action already shows.
