A pronoun has to fit the noun it replaces — in number, and clearly in identity.

Step 1 · Read

What does it stand for?

Vague they and mismatched his are two different problems. Fix both.

Antecedent = the noun the pronoun points back to.
Plural noun → plural pronoun: The scholars packed their bags.
If two nouns could be it, rewrite. Ambiguity is a grammar error in disguise.
Singular they is accepted in modern usage for a person whose gender is unknown or nonbinary. School tests may still prefer recasting: Each poet brought a notebook.
